Computer Vision Syndrome, also known as Digital Eye Strain, refers to a collection of eye and vision problems that arise from prolonged use of electronic devices such as computers, tablets, e-readers, and smartphones. Extended screen time can lead to symptoms including eye discomfort, blurred vision, and headaches.
For many, these symptoms can become significant and interfere with daily activities. A comprehensive eye examination with our eye doctors is recommended for proper diagnosis and management. At Lucent Family Eye Care, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of Computer Vision Syndrome, as well as in identifying and managing other visual conditions that may contribute to or be mistaken for CVS.
Common Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome are eyestrain, headaches, ocular pain, blurry vision, dry eyes, and neck or shoulder pain. However, these same symptoms can occur with many other visual conditions and even with other medical conditions. This is why a comprehensive vision examination and proper diagnosis is so important.
NOTE: these symptoms could occur in a person who wears corrective lenses or in a person who has 20/20 eyesight and wears no eyeglasses. The wrong or right prescription lenses are not always the cause or the remedy to these symptoms. Some vision problems can not be resolved by standard eyeglasses or contact lenses or eye surgery.

Absolutely. Several underlying or uncorrected vision conditions can contribute to, or be mistaken for, Computer Vision Syndrome. In some cases, symptoms experienced during digital device use may actually be caused by a different, undiagnosed vision problem. Additionally, the visual demands of prolonged screen time can uncover, exacerbate, or even lead to new vision issues that require professional attention.
Common conditions that may coexist with or mimic Computer Vision Syndrome include uncorrected farsightedness, astigmatism, convergence insufficiency, eye tracking disorders, intermittent strabismus, and undiagnosed amblyopia (lazy eye), among others. Furthermore, general health issues or the natural aging process can also impact vision.
For these reasons, regular comprehensive eye examinations are essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Early detection and management by a vision specialist can help address both Computer Vision Syndrome and any underlying visual conditions.
The management of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is determined by a comprehensive diagnosis and the presence of any coexisting visual conditions. Treatment options may include prescription eyewear, vision therapy, and modifications to visual habits or work environments. Currently, there are no medications or surgical procedures specifically for CVS.
Prolonged screen use has been shown to significantly reduce blink rate, which can contribute to the development of dry eye symptoms. During your evaluation, your eye care provider will thoroughly assess the health of your eyes for signs of dry eye disease. While lubricating eye drops may provide temporary relief, they do not prevent Computer Vision Syndrome or address all associated symptoms.
It is important to recognize that dry eye symptoms and ocular discomfort may also result from a range of other eye or general health conditions. If you are experiencing persistent discomfort, a comprehensive eye examination is essential to identify any underlying issues and ensure appropriate care. Extended screen time can reduce blink rate and contribute to dry eye symptoms, which may be particularly challenging for contact lens wearers. As a result, some individuals may prefer to use eyeglasses instead of contact lenses during work, school, or other activities that require prolonged digital device use.
